Hi my name’s Verity
I’m a mum to one wild toddler, one small baby and I’m lucky enough to have a very supportive girlfriend. I started dressmaking to give me something to focus on at a really difficult time in my life. I’ve been through pregnancy, newborn craziness and battled with post-natal depression and separation. Crochet was my gateway drug – I needed something to do with my hands, and to focus my energy on creating rather than worrying. After a while, I enrolled in a beginner’s course at my craft shop, and I haven’t looked back since.
I have sewn in the past – at school and after, but this side of me had lain dormant for a long time. Taking a class really helped to motivate and inspire me, and now sewing is a really big part of my life: I get cranky if I haven’t sewn in a while.
I love bold, quirky prints, and I’m inspired by retro styles. I have my own (reluctant) miniature model, who I love creating for. I occasionally sew for myself, but I’m primarily interested in sewing and designing for little people – I hope to branch out into pattern construction soon.
Before I started sewing again, I ran a online business selling vintage and reproduction dresses – I’m really inspired by styles from the 40s, 50s, and 70s, they suit my shape and showcase a bold and intriguing use of pattern and colour. I think they also lend themselves easily to toddler wear.
I have two beautiful girls, who I love to make dresses for, although I’m branching out into more unisex styles too. I’m primarily pattern and design led. I love pdf patterns and indie designers, making something out of nothing, and making do. I really want to inspire people to make their own clothes for their own little people.
Oh, one last thing.
What’s a thread bunny?
In quilting, it’s the name for lead-on piece of fabric, to help you keep your stitches straight, but it’s also my name for that tangle of threads and scraps left over after your make something. Kind of like a dust bunny, but for thread.
